Was asked to look at a non-booting machine. Discovered that cpu fan not running and PSU failed. Replaced PSU, no post and no CPU fan. Replaced CPU fan which now runs but still no post. Replaced CPU with identical spare, no post. Only light showing on the mobo is the green standby power. Sounds like the mobo is toast?

Retrodata - good yes, very good even but cheap - No.
Cheaper than most perhaps but not cheap anymore. Duncan has put his prices up several times since he started - and why not.
Still I suppose it depends what your data is worth to you.

If the HD has been tried in another PC and still doesn't work(?), it is likely that only the drive electronics board is damaged. In that case you may be able to find an identical drive and swap the boards to recover your data.

He's still relatively cheap - I've seen quotes ten times his.

Always. Which is why I have four layers of backup now.
Cheers - Jaimie -- Humans hate to admit error even as they stand there, black and smoldering, with the stub of a cigarette in one hand, in the middle of a wide crater containing them and the remains of a sign that once read 'DANGER: VOLATILE EXPLOSIVES' - James Nicoll
Thanks for all the replies. The HDD controller board has a fried component near the four pin drive connector. Turns out the data is not so important so will be binning the lot.

That happened to my Antec only a few days ago, also with no apparent damage to the rest of the machine. First look reveals lots of dust and fluff packed into the PSU case and some dodgy looking capacitors, I'll Hoover it out later and assess the full extent of the damage, and maybe have a go at replacing the capacitors some time.

Is it worth it, given you can get a decent new replacement for not very much? If it went bang, the bridge rectifier or switching transistors on the primary side have shorted, so you'd need to replace those as well as the dodgy output capacitors (and don't just replace the dodgy looking ones, do the lot. The others won't be far behind.)
If the mains fuse is glass, has the wire inside vaporised and covered the inside of the glass with shiny metal? If so, you definitely have a shorted bridge or switcher, usually the bridge.
